Robert A. Sargent, aka Pastor Bob, is the Pastor of South Swansea Baptist Church, married for 30 years, the father of four blessed children, and grand father of four precious gifts from the Lord.
As a young teen from a non-Christian background in Lowell, MA, Pastor Sargent sought out the counsel of the pastor at Massachusetts Baptist Temple, who lead him to the Lord in his office. The pastor saw something in the sixteen year old and decided to give Bob his own Bible. Nurtured by a dedicated youth worker and encouraged by other men and women, a seed for God and His Kingdom's work was planted.
In 1977, at the age of seventeen, the young convert left home to attend Midwestern Baptist College in Pontiac, Michigan. There he met Connie Motsinger and married her in December of 1980. Together they graduated in 1982. With his degree in Bible and Pastoral Ministries, he and his young bride moved to Lowell, MA, with hearts willing and prepared, to work at the Massachusetts Baptist Temple. There he became the Assistant Pastor, as well as Director of Youth and Visitation. His roles included teaching Sunday school, preaching in weekly nursing/convalescing homes, working bus routes, leading singing, working maintenance, cleaning the church and planning special programs.
In 1987, feeling the call upon his life to pastor, he began to preach in various Baptist churches throughout New England. In late February/early March through a pastor friend, a contact was made with the South Swansea Union Church. After initially speaking at the church and meeting with the leadership, Pastor Bob came as a candidate in May of that year. By June, Bob and Connie, along with their daughters Chaity and Carissa, happily moved into the church parsonage. Carlee and Cody were joyfully born into the Sargent family while they have lived in Swansea. All in the family have been blessed in serving at the church throughout their young lives and living for the Lord today, following the examples of unconditional love, endurance and faithfulness set by their parents and church family.
One of Pastor Sargent’s favorite verses is Luke 9:62- “But Jesus said to him, ‘No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.’”Gentle perseverance is his distinguishing characteristic. Now, after 23 years, he still has his hand to the plow, faithfully tilling the ground of souls and lovingly planting the seed of God’s Word.
After much prayer and purpose on a foundation that had been previously laid, the name of the ministry became South Swansea Baptist Church in 1998. Praise is continually made to God for His wonderful working in the hearts of His blessed people, especially in the beloved body of South Swansea.
